The Mpumalanga Transport and Community Safety Department has confirmed the number of deaths in a crash between a train and a bus has risen to six.
This is after a bus carrying over 30 pupils collided with a train on the R104 near Mafube Village outside Middelburg on Wednesday.
Eleven other children were injured.
The bus was reportedly on its way to Mafube Village at the time of the crash.
Community Safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi says the sixth pupil died in hospital.
"The number of learners who have passed on the R104 accident yesterday afternoon has now risen to six. This follows after the six learners who were receiving treatment at the hospital passed on after succumbing to the injuries.
"The five learners who died earlier yesterday afternoon after the bus they were travelling in was involved in a collision with a train."
Mpumalanga Community Safety MEC Jackie Macie and Transport Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa are expected to visit the crash scene on Thursday.
