Six killed, four injured in NWest crash
Four women and two men were killed on the N14 about 40 kilometres from Vryburg in the direction of Delareyville, said spokesman Shuping Sebolecwe.
The injured were rushed to hospital.
The taxi was travelling from Johannesburg to Vryburg at the time of the accident, he said.
The road where the accident occurred was temporarily closed to traffic because the truck had blocked the highway.
North West community safety and transport management MEC Gaoage Molapisi appealed to motorists to rest every two hours when driving long distances.
Authorities believed that exhaustion might have been the cause of the accident because the driver of the truck had told them the taxi driver was asleep and drove into the oncoming traffic lane.
"Fatigue contributes towards most accidents experienced on public roads. We are in deep sorrow as the North West government with the rate of fatalities on our roads.
"We are going to strengthen our law enforcement operations and those found on the wrong side of the law will be harshly dealt with."
Molapisi sent his condolences to the families and friends of those killed.
