SA Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said the robbery took place at a club in Lady Grey street, around 2am and after the arrest police confiscated money and electronic equipment.

“The members pursued [a] suspected vehicle after the suspects fled the scene. The chased ended in Plein Street Paarl, where members from Paarl SAPS cornered and arrested the suspects.”

Traut said the suspects were five men and one woman all in their late 20’s.

“Three firearms, two revolvers and one pistol with ammunition, money and electronic equipment were recovered,” he said.

It was alleged that the suspects entered the club, threatened and pointed the patrons with firearms, then fired a shot and robbed them, Traut said.

“Personal belongings including money and cellular telephones were taken. Two people were pistol whipped and sustained minor injuries. Money was also taken from the safes and slot machines before the suspects fled the scene.”

The suspects will be charged with armed robbery, attempted murder, and the possession of firearms and ammunition.

Other charges may be added as the investigation continues, and they are expected to appear in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court soon. -ANA
