Slight decrease in SA’s Covid-19 positivity rate

The Covid-19 positivity rate in South Africa has decreased slightly to 22.8% on Friday.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has recorded 19 018 new Covid-19 cases, which is a positive decline in new infections.
This comes from 83 515 tests that were conducted in the last 24 hours.
An additional 20 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 90,080.
The country’s total laboratory-confirmed cases stand at 3 112 463 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Gauteng remains the province with the most cases with 9250 new infections picked up on Friday.
“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (49%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (13%). Western Cape accounted for 11%; North West accounted for 6%; Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo and Mpumalanga each accounted for 5% respectively; and Northern Cape accounted for 1% of today’s new cases,” says the NICD in a statement.
There has been an increase of 507 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.
A total of 5344 people are currently admitted to both private and public health facilities.
On the vaccine front, 119 106 vaccines were administered on Friday.
