Smugglers hid illegal cigarettes in banana boxes
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
They were transporting illegal cigarettes disguised as bananas, officials say.
Police spokesperson Captain Kabelo Marumo says the owners of the truck contacted police on suspicion it had been hijacked.
“The truck owners where monitoring its location when it changed route to Pretoria. They thought it had been hijacked so they contacted police,” Marumo says.
A group of men were spotted offloading what appeared to be boxes of bananas.
Police checked the consignment, and discovered cartons of cigarettes worth thousands of rands.
A further unknown number of suspects managed to escape, Marumo says.
