Springs monster case to resume next year

The so-called house of Horrors trial has been postponed to March next year.

Judge Eben Jordaan briefly heard the matter this morning after the mother returned from psychiatric observation.

She and her estranged husband, who's still in custody, face a range of charges over alleged crimes involving their children.

Judge Eben Jordaan sent the women for observation after a new report was submitted to the court which found her to have been a victim of both physical and sexual abuse by her husband.

This, coupled with hear-say evidence that she might be suffering from dyslexia and have a low IQ, is why the report found that she should not be held liable.

According to the state, the report is complete but not yet available.

The Springs mother, who can't be named to protect the identities of her children, looked well-rested when she walked into Court Room A this morning.

She embraced her defence attorneys Harry Prinsloo and Louiza vd Walt.

The trial is set to resume on 20 March.

Earlier this year a police officer, social worker and nurse testified about the state in which they found the children and the house.

Police found pornographic material and sex toys in the house, while the children were found to have been deprived of health care and decent living conditions.

So far the case has centred around the couple's then 11-year-old son who fled to the neighbours to ask for help.

He was later found by police with both eyes swollen and bruises on his face.
