Social Development Dept opens centre to offer support to anxious matriculants

The Department of Social Development has opened its Gender-Based Violence Command Centre (GBVCC) to offer support to matriculants who may be anxious about their results.

Matric results for the class of 2019 are expected to be released between Tuesday and Wednesday.


 


The Department's spokesperson, Lumka Olifant says reports of depression and suicide tend to be high during this time.


 


The centre, which has been operating for six years, offers support from trained social workers has been opened to matriculants together with their parents and caregivers.


 


"It also appeals to parents to look out for any signs of depression expressed by their children so that interventions can be sought early to help the youngsters deal with the outcome of their examinations," says Olifant.


 


She adds that the centre also caters for deaf pupils through Skype.


 


The Department has also extended its well-wishes to all the 596 720 social grants beneficiaries who sat down for their matric examinations in 2019.
