The fund released its annual report for the financial year ending February on Tuesday morning.

The fund’s Gugu Ngubane said it has disbursed R1.97 billion across 30 approved projects.

The latest approved funds are to refurbish the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

The hospital has not been fully operational since it was damaged by fire earlier this year.

Ngubane said restoring Charlotte Maxeke to full operational capacity is part of the fund’s objectives of preparing the health system for the fourth Covid-19 wave.

“Reopening ‘block one’ was identified as the most urgent need to address before the fourth wave and the hospital approached the fund to offer assistance with the fire compliance requirements of CMJAH that would allow it to reopen.

“After preliminary engagements with all parties involved regarding processes in place to reopen CMJAH, our partners SPIRE recommended a revised approach, that of supporting in full the refurbishment for fire compliance of ‘block one’.”
