Some mid-year exams moved due to elections

The Department of Basic Education has moved some of the mid-year matric exams from May to June due to the elections.

 The department says it’s all system go for the mid-year examinations, which is set to start on May 2, with over 350 000 registered candidates.


 


 


The department’s Elijah Mhlanga says some exams have been moved to ensure that everybody is able to vote. 


 


"So far we have not encountered any challenges in terms of preparation expect issues around elections because when the timetable was determined the date for the elections had not been announced.


 


"So, after that, we had to go back to the timetable and make some revisions and initially it was only just for one day which is the 8 of May but through representation which members of the public have made in terms of traveling and getting to their homes closer to their polling stations.


 


"Which means on 7, 8 and 9 May there won't be any examination written.”


 


 


There are 166 453 full time registered candidates and 191 149 part-time registered candidates. 


 


 


“A total of 6 581 centers will be used for the writing of the mid-year 2019 examinations, while a total of 35 marking centers have been identified to be used for the marking of the examination,” Mhlanga says.


 


 


The results for the mid-year exams will be announced on August 2.
