Gauteng police are investigating the circumstances around the deaths of a father and his three children at their Soshanguve home, east of Pretoria on Tuesday.

Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubela says the mother had gone to the police station - unaware of the recent developments - to lodge a complaint after the father had taken the kids.
Makhubela says neighbours earlier found the four bodies.

"The mother is receiving counselling from the police station from our victim empowerment centre after she went there, unaware that the kids were already killed and she just wanted report that the father had taken the kids away, only to find that the police had already got the information of the three kids who were found with their father in their house hanging."
He says the neighbours went to check on the father after noticing that he hadn’t left the house in a while.
"When the father entered the house the neighbours saw him and then they saw that he didn't come out for some time and they went in and tried to break the door and that's when they found him hanging. They notified the police."
Makhubela says the motive is still unknown and a case of murder is being investigated.
