The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says South Africa has technically entered its third wave of coronavirus infections.

The country has recorded 9 149 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours- which represents a 15.7% positivity rate.
“South Africa technically entered the third wave today as the national 7-day moving average incidence (5959 cases) now exceeds the new wave threshold as defined by the Ministerial Advisory Committee. The MAC advisory defined the new wave 7-day moving average threshold as 30% of the peak incidence of the previous wave,” says the institute in a statement.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 1 722 086.
Gauteng is leading with 5 597 new cases.
The economic hub of the country accounts for 61% of the new infections, followed by the Western Cape with 10%.
Free State and North West provinces both accounted for 6% of the new infections.
127 people succumbed to the virus - bringing the country’s death toll to 57,474.
