Dr Alex Boraine, who served as the vice chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), passed away at the age of 87 on Wednesday.
Boriane was famously known for proposing the TRC and thereafter served alongside Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu from 1996 to 1998.
He was also one of the founders of the Institute of Democracy in South Africa.
The CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang, says Boraine played a significant role in the country's history.
"In his honour, may we also continue to do the hard work of building our nation.
"I am hopefully that we won't just remember Alex Boraine the deputy chairperson of the TRC, but we remember Alex Boraine the person who was trying his best to build a united country, free of racism. He didn't look at race as defining for people and concluding on their behalf."
