South Africa welcomes UNSC resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza
South Africa has welcomed the United Nations Security Council's resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the holy month of Ramadan.
The UN Security Council called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Monday, after more than five months of the war.
The UNSC's resolution calls for the truce to lead to a 'lasting, sustainable ceasefire'.
The resolution further demands that Hamas and other militants’ free hostages that were seized in the October 7 attack in which thousands lost their lives.
Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor said it is vital for all parties involved to comply with the Security Council.
“South Africa is pleased that the Security Council has, at long last, demanded an immediate and lasting ceasefire for the month of Ramadan and the Resolution must also proposed that this ceasefire should lead to a lasting sustainable ceasefire" said Pandor.
"It is now the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council to ensure that there is compliance with the resolution, which is binding on the parties" she added.
Fourteen members voted in favour of the UN Security Council's resolution; the United States however abstained.
