South African Union of Students to shut down universities
The South African Union of Students (SAUS) says it plans to shut down higher learning institutions from Monday.
SAUS says it will get a mandate from students this weekend on their plans to protest for free higher education.
SAUS President Avela Mjajubana says they are disappointed following a meeting with the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, today.
"From next week we would want to meet President Jacob Zuma, but to meet with him students must be on the streets," Mjajubana said.
Mjajubana says they are also concerned by the lack of engagement between government and the private sector to address the issue of fees.
"We will never accept any increment, actually even this 0 percent is a burden to the working class and the poor," he said.
Minister Nzimande postponed his 2017 fee adjustments announcement this afternoon to allow for further consultations.
