South Africans again in a frenzy over NASA programme name
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The name of this programme has some South Africans stunned and others in tears from laughter.

This, seven years after it first made headlines.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has a programme called Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES).
Some on social media couldn't keep a straight face when they heard about it as the abbreviation has a very different meaning in South Africa.

NASA, on its website, says the POES project instruments provide critical operational climate data that is integrated into the weather prediction model used in developing current and extended weather forecasts.
Here's what Twitter thinks:
Everyone sharing that Nasa POES project but it's actually pretty old...or am I just old that I actually remember it??

NASA has started a new program but failed to consult S. Africa when naming the POES project and now the internet can’t keep a straight face.

As a South African NASA's acronym for its new program, The Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES), is beyond hilarious. pic.twitter.com/3XYSnfh2wI
