The matter was postponed to Friday for further investigation, police spokesman Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said outside the court.

"It will be explained fully to them what they are charged for. They will also be assessed by social workers on whether they are fit to stand trial," he said.

The boys appeared in the children's court. Chained by their hands and feet, they hid their faces under their sweaters as they were escorted into the court.

The pair wore the clothes they had worn at their previous appearances. They were kept in the court while other matters continued.

Both aged 16, the boys were facing murder charges after Thandeka Moganetsi, 15, and Chwayita Rathazayo, 16, were found dead in a field in

Dobsonville last week. The girls were dressed in George Khoza Secondary School uniforms and had cuts on their hands and necks.

Three black candles and two new razor blades were found at the scene.
