Soweto protesters threaten to burn down restaurant
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
"We tried to clean the road last night and they went into the famous restaurant Sakhumzi... they said they wanted to burn that restaurant so that Eskom takes them seriously," Superintendent Edna Mamonyane said.
The protest continued on Thursday morning as the residents blockaded roads in the area.
"The protest is still on. We [JMPD] are there to make sure that other people in the neighbourhood are safe," she said.
On Wednesday, metro police fired rubber bullets at the protesters.
At the time, Mamonyane said several hundred residents blocked Vilakazi and Khumalo Streets, as well as Klipspruit Valley Road, with burning tyres and boulders in the morning.
The metro police managed to negotiate with the protesters on Wednesday and took them to the Uncle Tom Hall, where they were addressed by Eskom officials.
However, after the meeting the residents went back to protesting.
ach we will unlock value in such rubble and subsidise the cost of removing it," Tau said.
