Soweto street vendors nabbed for fake permits

Three street vendors have been arrested by the Johannesburg metro police for allegedly being in possession of fake essential services permits.

The suspects were arrested in Protea Glen on Monday afternoon while operating their businesses.

Government has given informal traders the green light to operate for the remainder of the lockdown, as long as they are in possession of a permit.
The metro police’s Wayne Minnaar says one street vendor was taken in as a witness.
“A third suspect has been taken in to be a witness for the state because he actually bought the fake permit for R300.
“Permits have been made by individuals and selling them to street vendors at R300 each and JMPD got to know about these fake permits when a local counsellor reported it.”
The remaining two suspects will appear in court soon.
