Soweto teen fit to stand trial
One of two teenage boys accused of killing two Soweto schoolgirls has been declared fit to stand trial, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.
The teenager underwent mental observation at Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital.
The two boys appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Wednesday in connection with the murders, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.
They would appear in court again on July 17. This would allow the second teenager to also undergo mental observation at Sterkfontein.
The boys, who cannot be named because they are minors, were arrested in connection with the murders of Thandeka Moganetsi, 15, and Chwayita Rathazayo, 16.
The girls were found dead in a field in Dobsonville in February. They were both in their George Khoza Secondary School uniforms and had cuts on their hands and necks.
Three black candles and two new razor blades were found at the scene. This has led to speculation that the murders were related to a Satanic ritual.
