The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Pietermaritzburg say they have had to put down numerous animals after a tornado hit parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

The whirlwind ravaged areas in New Hanover, which includes Thokozani and Mpolweni in the Mshwathi municipality, just outside Pietermaritzburg.

Pietermaritzburg SPCA spokesperson Roland Fivaz says they have been dispatched to euthanise several animals in the area.
“We do not have numbers at the moment, a lot of the animals are still missing, obviously lifestock would run as soon as the storm approached, as well as domestic dogs.
“From the SPCA point of view we’ve been dealing with injured animals out there putting down one cow that was hit by a transformer box, a dog that had a spinal injury and a few chickens was hit by flying bricks and walls collapsing.”
