Speak out against wrongdoing: Public Protector
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Public Protector Thuli Madonsela addressed the 6th Annual Ethics Conference in Illovo, Johannesburg on Monday where she stressed the need to speak out against wrongdoing.
Madonsela said behaving ethically at times meant that you wouldn't be liked by all, but that one had to adhere to one's moral compass.
Madonsela said there was a growing demand for accountability and ethical behaviour in the country and that there was a rebirth of ethical leadership in the country.
"We are going through a rough patch, but we are going to do better pretty soon. I see a bright future, because there is this movement - the ethics movement - that is growing. Business dialogue is including a lot of ethics these days. Government is also having discussion that include ethics," Madonsela said.
In a few months, Madonsela's tenure as Public Protector will come to an end and said she was not worried about who was going to replace her.
"I think Parliament will not want to kill the office, but you ideally would prefer a professional who has consistently upheld the law. I'm not saying the person would have to be an angle, but a certain level of integrity is expected,' she said.
