Spotlight on Gauteng buildings
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Gauteng Provincial government has established a high level provincial Occupational Health and Safety Steering Committee to centralise the safety function for all buildings accommodating government employees.

The committee will be chaired by Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) MEC Jacob Mamabolo and will be made up of heads of departments.
Gauteng Government Head of Communication, Thabo Masebe says this will strengthen the provincial government's capacity to enforce compliance in all departments.
"The Department of Infrastructural Development will ensure that all heads of department take action to meet the minimum requirements for compliance," he says.

However, the centralisation of this function will not take away legislative responsibility of Accounting Officers in respect of occupational safety.
"It seeks to ensure that this function is stabilised, and functions in the most efficient and effective manner. It is at this point that a determination will be made on its gradual decentralisation," adds Masebe.
The bank of Lisbon fire was finally doused down by Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni firefighters on Thursday.
MEC Mamabolo has also vowed that if the investigation implicates him in any way, then he would take full responsibility.
