SRC demand urgent meeting with UKZN council

Following the torching of two university properties in as many days, the SRC at UKZN wants an urgent executive council meeting to discuss what it says are outstanding issues with management.

In the early hours of yesterday morning, an examination hall was set alight at the Maritzburg campus.

It followed the burning down of a coffee shop at its Howard College campus in Durban.

Among other things - the SRC wants representation on the university council.

SRC President, Siphelele Nguse, says the meeting should happen sooner rather than later to avoid university buildings continuing to burn.

"We want a second council meeting. We cannot wait for maybe some time in September where the council meeting is going to sit. We want an urgent council meeting to sit now and discuss these issues, because these delaying tactics are not working for us," he said.

But the institution's Lesiba Seshoka says students should wait for the scheduled council meeting.

"We deadlocked on the two issues of serving on the executives, and the issue of dropping the charges. And council has made it clear that because they had requested to address these issues, that they're allowed to do so on the 19th of September when the university council will be meeting," he said.

Lectures at all UKZN campuses were disrupted over the past two weeks, following student protests over fee increments for 2017, and housing issues.
