Stage 2 loadshedding is back and will continue over the weekend
Updated | By Neo Motloung
Eskom has announced it will implement stage two loadsheding from 12pm on Thursday.
The power utility's spokesperson, Sikonathi Mantshantsha, says power cuts are expected to last until 11pm on Sunday.
Eskom gave South Africans less than 2 hours’ notice to prepare for the latest round of power interruptions.
"The loadshedding is necessary due to loss of generation capacity overnight.
"Loadshedding is also required to manage the use of the emergency reserves, which will help us contain the stage of loadshedding required," says Mantshantsha.
He warns the electricity network remains vulnerable and unpredictable and if further breakdowns take place, further stages of loadshedding may be implemented at short notice.
"Two-generation units at the Kusile Power Station tripped due to the failure of the main coal feed conveyor belts supplying coal to the units.
"In addition, a unit each at the Kriel and Duvha tripped due to unforeseen breakdowns. We presently have four generation units whose return to service from planned maintenance has been delayed," says Mantshantsha.
