The embattled power utility says stage 4 load shedding will end on Tuesday evening at 23:00, thereafter stage 2 will be implemented until 09:00 on Wednesday.

Stage 4 will return at 9:00.

Eskom says the dreaded rolling blackouts had to be implemented following a trip at Koeberg Nuclear Powerplant in Cape Town.

“Koeberg Unit 1 has been disconnected from the grid due to a fault on the turbine section,” says spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha.

The power grid lost approximately 930 megawatt after Koeberg was switched off.

Mantshantsha says no there is no safety threat due to the damaged water pump.

“It is expected that repairs will take a number of days before the unit can be brought back into operation.”
