The embattled power utility had initially planned to implement stage 4 until 5am on Saturday morning, then stage 3 loadshedding between 5am and 4pm during the day.

However, Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokoena sent out a notice on Friday night, saying the utility had to implement stage 4 continuously due to higher than anticipated demand and failure of some generation units.

Earlier on Friday, the struggling utility reported that breakdowns increased to 15 388MW of generating capacity.

That while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance increased to 7 169MW.

Mokoena also confirmed that two generation units were returned to service at Lethabo and Medupi power over the past 24 hours.

"In the same period, a generating unit each at Hendrina, Matimba and two units at Matla power stations were taken offline for repairs. The delays in returning a unit to service at Camden, Kriel and Tutuka power stations have contributed to the capacity constraints," she added.
