Stander case back on the roll

Culpable homicide charges against minibus taxi driver Njabulo Nyawose have been reinstated, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Tuesday.

   

The matter arising from the death of mountain biker Burry Stander in an accident was due in court on August 21, NPA KwaZulu-Natal spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson said.

   

"Everyone was concerned [when the case] was provisionally withdrawn for the directorate of public prosecutions to make a decision whether to prosecute," she said.

   

"The matter is due in court on August 21 to reinstate the charges and a trial date will be set after that."

   

The charges were provisionally withdrawn earlier this month.

   

Nyawose was allegedly driving the minibus taxi involved in the accident on January 3.

   

Stander, 25, died in the accident which happened while he was cycling in Shelley Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.

   

He was fifth in the men's cross-country race at the 2012 London Olympics. Four years earlier, at the Beijing Games, he finished 15th in the cross-country event.
