Lehohla briefed the media on the quarterly employment statistics on Wednesday afternoon in Pretoria.

Lehohla explained there was an increase of 43,000 employees quarter to quarter and an increase of 6,000 employees year on year.

Lehohla said quarterly gains were observed in three industries - trade is up by 2.3%, finance and other business services by 0,8%, and community and social services is up by 0,5%.

The mining industry continued to decline in the fourth quarter by 14,000 employees, followed by a decline of 13,000 in the third quarter.

Year on year mining declined by 29,000 employees, or 5,9%.

Construction and the transport industry both declined quarter on quarter and year on year.

Lehohla said, despite the increase of 6000 jobs year on year and 43,000 quarter on quarter, it only made a dent in unemployment.
