Stats SA warns of data scammers
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
Statistics South Africa has warned South Africans, and in particular residents of Limpopo, of scammers pretending to be officials collecting data.

The organisation says some community members in Giyani have been robbed by these individuals.
"Stats SA does not ask respondents to provide their banking details, nor confirm if they are using mobile banking apps. Members of the public are urged to be vigilant and not to fall victim to the scam," says organisation’s Trevor Oosterwyk.
Oosterwyk says Stats SA has temporarily suspended all face-to-face data collection due to Covid-19 restrictions.
"This includes the frame update project in which fieldworkers go door-to-door collecting contact details from households so that we can use alternative interviewing modes, including computer-assisted telephone interviewing.”
The organisation says field workers wear branded bibs, carry Stats SA ID cards, and have introduction letters.
The organisation says the public can also identify the individual from their website.
