Steenhuisen vows to ‘return power to the people’

Newly elected Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen says his 3-year tenure at the helm of the opposition party will usher in a new dawn for the party and the country’s political landscape.
Steenhuisen was elected at the party’s federal congress at the weekend.
In his maiden address to some 2000 delegates, Steenhuisen vowed to return power to the people of South Africa.
“I am here because I want to take the DA to greater heights in our fight for a country where each and every citizen has the power to build a dignified life. People want to stand on their own two feet as self-reliant, autonomous human beings. They want the power and the freedom to make their own choices and build a life they value,” he said on Sunday.
“This is what the DA will offer under my leadership. People power.”

Steenhuisen takes the helm of the party just over a year after Maimane's resignation. More than 2000 delegates took part in the party's federal congress at the weekend, where Steenhuisen went toe-to-toe against KwaZulu-Natal MPL Mbali Ntuli. Some 80% of the delegates voted in favour of Steenhuisen as leader.
Steenhuisen slammed the African National Congress (ANC) for what he believes is the party’s failure to meet some of its resolutions.
He said much of his work as leader will be in preparation to take on the ANC at the local elections in 2021 and later, the general elections in 2024.
“If we resolutely stick to our principles as we’ve recently done in Tshwane, there is a clear path to victory for the DA and people power for South Africa.
“In addition to the dozens of municipalities where we already deliver world-class services as the party of government, another two dozen could have DA-led councils after the 2021 local election,” he added.
