The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Pretoria, Prof. Cheryl de la Rey released a statement on Monday confirming that classes will not resume on Tuesday.
According to the statement the decision was taken in light of what the university calls "an increased threat of violence nationally."
"In the interest of the safety of students and staff, academic activities at the University of Pretoria will not resume. We hope to resume with classes on Wednesday but will keep you informed," the statement read.
De la Rey said that the university remains committed to concluding the 2016 academic year and that they are currently working on alternative arrangements to ensure that students are able to complete their studies.

"As soon as these arrangements have been finalised, the faculties will communicate the relevant details," she said in a statement.
Yesterday, the university continued engagements with staff and students to determine the university's position on the call for free higher education.
"Despite a few disruptions, constructive discussions proceeded. The day concluded with me addressing a large gathering of staff," she said.
Discussions with staff will continue on Tuesday.
