‘Stressed, malnourished’ donkey rescued from Vaal Dam island

As the Christmas weekend drew to a close, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was tasked with an unusual rescue, bringing the festive cheer to a four-legged family.

This comes after it successfully rescued a stranded donkey on the Vaal Dam near Deneysville in the Free State on Sunday.
The donkey reportedly went onto the island some four weeks ago when water levels were low but was unable to return to the mainland when water levels rose.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon specialised teams were dispatched to the island for the rescue mission.
“Local vets, from Villiers Veterinary hospital, were activated and on their arrival we brought the vet to the island and he confirmed that the donkey was stressed and malnourished.
“We brought our NSRI Crock and a specialised stretcher to the scene. The vet darted the donkey to calm the donkey before we loaded the donkey onto the stretcher and then with care we loaded the donkey onto our NSRI Crock.”
Lambinon adds the donkey has since been reunited with its family.
“The donkey is being well cared for by its owners who were delighted at the return on their donkey that has been missing for the last four weeks.”
