Strike looming at Metrobus in Joburg
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
Members of the Democratic Municipal and Allied Workers Union of South Africa (Demawusa) are set to down tools at Metrobus in Johannesburg from Monday.
The union’s Dion Makhura says there are still unresolved issues from a strike in May last year.
"These issues are not new issues. I see their communication as disturbing to us, they are talking like it's something which is starting now. They were aware about this problem for almost a year."

Makhura says that workers are demanding equal pay.
"Workers who are doing the same job either are paid peanuts, you find that drivers have different kinds of salaries. We are saying that is salary disparity and that disparity has to be dealt with.”
He says workers are also unhappy with the way the union is treated and the administration of annual and sick leave.
Metrobus spokesperson Goodwill Shivuri says management is currently in talks with the union and hopes to be able to avert a strike.
"Metrobus management is currently engaging with the unions, all relevant stakeholders, the public and all valued customers will be kept abreast with the developments.”
