‘Strong leads’ after gang robs Shoprite

Police in Gauteng say they are following up on strong leads after a group of about 10 armed men robbed a Shoprite store in Johannesburg.

More arrests are imminent after a group of at least 10 gunmen stormed and robbed the Shoprite supermarket in Heidelberg.
A guard was shot dead at close range after he scuffled with one of the perpetrators at the entrance while two more robbers entered the shop.
The incident occurred at the Ratanda Mall on Friday evening.
The gunmen robbed the supermarket of a substantial amount of cash.
A suspect was arrested and appeared in a local Johannesburg court and remanded in jail.

According to police spokesperson, Lungelo Dlamini, a manhunt has been launched for the remaining nine suspects.
“One suspect was arrested after being found in the possession of an unlicensed firearm. He has been charged with armed robbery, murder, attempted murder as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm. He appeared in court yesterday.”
