Students' grievances undermined by criminal activity: Cabinet
Cabinet has told students their grievances are being undermined by criminal activities, such as the destruction of property.
Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe briefed media Thursday morning following yesterday's cabinet meeting.
He said Cabinet was concerned about the resurgence of violent protests at some institutions of higher learning.
Radebe said government remained committed to ensuring quality and affordable education for all, adding that funding made available through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) now stands at R14.5 billion.
Cabinet urged all stakeholders to give the so-called Fees Commission a chance to complete its work - which should be done by the end of June 2017.
Radebe said the destruction of property is a criminal activity and he doesn't believe genuine students will go to the extent of burning a library.
"Our call is that the genuine grievances of students are being undermined by these criminal activities that destroy the very same institutions that we want to promote. We are calling upon students that they must desist from being misled by criminal elements that destroy property," he said.
