He called on all students and student organisations to remain calm while government review the fees for next year after the South African Union of Students said that they are meeting with student representative councils across South Africa soon.

SAUS was looking for a mandate to shut down university campuses country wide saying that government was dragging its feet on this matter.

SAUS president, Avela Mjajubana said government was not doing enough to make free tertiary education a reality in South Africa.

"From Monday we will be meeting with students, tabling the proposed increase in fees, and if students indicate that we must shut down campuses, we will," he told Jacaranda FM News.

He added that president Jacob Zuma must be transparent when it comes to the possible increase in fees.

"We are not going to accept any increment and this is not just a matter for the ministry of higher education, but a matter of the cabinet and the president," he added.

Mjajubana also said that the private sector could contribute immensely in funding education in South Africa.

"We are going to march to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the Chamber of Mines to demand that they fund students," Mjajubana added.

He said that they have requested a meeting with the JSE and Chamber of Mines but that nobody responded, prompting an "alternative" approach.

"These institutions gain from the human resource which the government is preparing," Mjajubana concluded.
