The substation caught alight on Saturday evening.
Affected areas include Lenasia South, Migson Manor, Finetown and Mountain View, while supply has subsequently been restored to customers in Ennerdale.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said most of the substation's equipment has been damaged.
“Preliminary reports attribute the explosion to multiple burnt cables. A further investigation will be conducted and repairs to ensure that supply is restored to the remaining areas will be effected.
“In the interest of safety, the affected customers to treat all appliances as live during the period of the outage.
“We apologise for the inconvenience this causes to our customers We will continue communicate as and when there are developments regarding the situation."
It's not known when the power will be restored.
