Sunnyside police constable killed during routine roadblock
Updated | By Gerda de Sousa
A second constable was injured in the attack that took place late on Friday night.
Gauteng police's Brigadier Mathapelo Peters says the two male constables were conducting a routine stop-and-search roadblock, when they were attacked on the corner of Leyds and Esselen streets in Sunnyside at about 11 pm on Friday night.
"The suspect then fled the scene and the circumstances involving this incident form part of the murder investigation."
The 34-old constable succumbed to his injuries in hospital, while the 41-year old constable is in a stable condition in hospital.
Peters says it's still too early in the investigation to determine whether this latest police killing can be linked to the recent violence that has lead to the killing of a Taxify driver in Sunnyside on Thursday night.
Peters has called on anyone that could have witnessed the incident or have information about the whereabouts of the suspects, is urged to come forward or call the Crime Stop number, 08 600 10111.
