The man was arrested by the provincial anti-gang unit after he fled the court on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says the sergeant was shot with his own firearm.

“The arrested suspect entered the Motherwell court building, disarmed the member, shot and killed him with the state firearm and thereafter fled on foot.

“The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola has commended the swift response of the Eastern Cape’s Anti-Gang unit for apprehending a man who shot and killed a 42-year-old Sergeant who was serving as a court orderly at the Motherwell Magistrate Court in Gqeberha this morning.”

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development spokesperson Steve Mahlangu says trauma counselling will be offered to staff members.

“Unfortunately, the department is not in a position to comment further regarding the incident pending an official investigation into the matter. All staff members who witnessed the incident will be afforded trauma counselling service and psychosocial support."
