Suspect arrested for possession of drugs again

Police interrupted a drug delivery in Bellville and nabbed a suspect they had previously arrested for similar offences, the City of Cape Town said on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off from the public, the City’s Metro Police Gang and Drug Task Team on Sunday intercepted the suspect en route to delivering drugs in Bellville. In the suspect’s possession was a packet of tik, five bankies of dagga, and over R1000.

“When they pulled him over, officers identified the Fiat Palio and the driver as a suspect who was previously arrested in July for possession of drugs,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith.

Smith said it was “a little disheartening” that police were coming across suspects they had previously encountered.

“No doubt the communities who see drug dealers arrested today and back on the street tomorrow feel the same,” he said.

“So I would appeal to the criminal justice system to take a harder line on these offences.”

Over the weekend, and acting on a tip-off from the public, the City’s Tactical Response Unit arrested a 19-year-old suspect after finding dagga in his Beacon Valley home. Police also confiscated nearly R15,000 in cash from the suspect.

“These are both good arrests and came from credible information from the public,” said Smith.

“We are thankful to residents who have had enough of these drug peddlers in their communities and who are standing up by blowing the whistle.” -ANA
