Gauteng police have arrested a 30-year-old man who allegedly shot and killed the chairperson of a metered taxi association in Pretoria.
The man was taken into custody by officers from the police’s rail unit on Tuesday evening.
The officers, who were on duty at Pretoria Station, heard gunshots and went to investigate.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said the officers attempted to stop the suspect, and a shootout ensued.
“The suspect was shot and injured before he was arrested. In his possession, police found a firearm and ammunition.
Masondo said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, who is from Inanda in KwaZulu-Natal, had just shot and killed a meter taxi owner.
“The suspect, who is in hospital under police guard, will be charged with murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. Investigation is underway to determine if the suspect is not linked to other crimes, particularly those that are related to taxi violence.”
The suspect is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court as soon as he released from hospital.
