Suspected hijacker killed in shootout with police in Heidelberg
Gauteng police on Saturday shot and killed a suspected hijacker and arrested another on the R550 at Suikerbosrand in Heidelberg.
The shootout followed an incident where three people were hijacked while driving into their yard in Tsakane.
The hijacked vehicle was spotted on R550 by highway patrol and private security, after which a chase ensued.
“The suspects stopped the car and ran on foot while shooting at the officers. The officers retaliated, fatally wounding one of the suspects and arresting one while the other two suspects managed to evade arrest. Two firearms were found on the scene,” said SAPS spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
“The arrested suspect is set to appear in court soon, facing charges of hijacking, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.”
Police have launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects.
