Sibusiso Herbert Madonsela (52), Thembisile Gloria Madonsela (48) and Sibusiso Ernest Lekhuleni (52) are alleged to have defrauded the South African Revenue Services of R780 000.

The trio are alleged to have submitted fraudulent tax returns for their company, SHOP MOR Enterprise, to SARS in March.

On Monday, they were remanded in custody following their arrest on the same day.

They face charges of Fraud, Contravention of the Tax Administration Act and Contravention of POCA.

In recent months, SARS has tightened the noose around the necks of South Africans who are suspected of not paying their dues.

Last month, SARS made a major breakthrough in dismantling a coal syndicate which included former Eskom employees operating in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and Limpopo.

In a statement, SARS said the bust shielded them from more than R500 million loss.

“During an internal audit, auditors detected the discrepancies and reported the matter to the Hawks for further investigation. During the investigation, the accused were linked to the fraud. Warrants of arrest were issued. The accused were remanded in custody, and the case was postponed to Wednesday, 1 November 2023, for bail judgment,” said police spokesperson Dineo Sekgotodi.

The case will be back in court on 1 December for trial.
