‘Tainted sweets’ strike down 300 Joburg pupils

The Department of Health in Gauteng is investigating an incident where some 300 pupils fell ill at the Nomini Primary School, south of Johannesburg.

The pupils complained of stomach cramps, while some started vomiting after apparently all eating sweets they bought from a hawker on Thursday.
The department's spokesperson Kwara Kekana says preliminary reports suggest that the pupils had all eaten the same sweets.
The pupils were rushed to local hospitals between Thursday and Friday.
"The latest figures of today are that 190 of the pupils were attended to at the Stretford Community Health Care Centre, 67 were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and about 30 of them were taken to Bheki Mlangeni Hospital and 50 were taken to Lenasia South Clinic," Kekana says.
Some of the pupils were still receiving treatment on Friday afternoon.
