Task team to probe alleged racist attack in Potchefstroom
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
The North West police has established a task team to investigate the attack on well-known athlete Thabang Mosiako.
The 22-year-old was severely attacked and beaten in Potchefstroom two weeks ago.
Mosiako was attacked, along a fellow athlete Rantso Mokopane, with the athletes claiming it was racially-motivated.
"There has been no arrest made, but there is a task team established which is investigating the assault case that was opened. It is an assault to cause grievous bodily harm," says police spokesperson Adele Myburgh.
Reports suggest a group of at least ten people attacked Mosiako and Mokopane.
Myburg could not confirm the number of suspects involved in the attack.
The University of North West (NWU) says investigations are underway to establish if the attackers are students at the university.
"Apart from the fact that they are or not students, something like this is condemned in the strongest terms. We would like to get to a point where we can determine that it is NWU students and if so then automatically the process of our own internal disciplinary measures kick in," says NWU spokesperson Louis Jacobs.
