Task teams to analyse Mining Charter
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Department of Mineral and Resources (DMR) will establish two task teams to discuss the third incarnation of the Mining Charter before it is gazetted.

This decision comes after a meeting between the department and social partners at the weekend.
Minister Gwede Mantashe says there has been a distinct lack of consultation in the past.
"We concluded that two task teams should be established. One will focus on transformation and the Mining Charter, and the other will engage on issues of growth and competitiveness issues."
The two task team are set to report back in three weeks.
Mantashe says there is a need to re-establish trust in the sector.

"The Ministry is currently developing a planned programme for consultation with communities on the Charter.
"It is my wish that the final Charter is finalised and gazetted during the first half of the year, adds Mantashe".
The latest version of the Mining Charter caused a rift between the department and the industry, when then minister Mosebenzi Zwane proposed that black ownership should be increased from 26% to 30%.
Zwane subsequently suspended the charter after the Chamber of Mines took it to court to have it reviewed and set aside.
