Tax-paying farmers deserve a safer environment - AfriForum
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Lobby group AfriForum has reiterated its call on government to implement a unique strategy to deal with farm attacks in the country.
The group released a report on farm attacks and murders that happened over the last six years.
It claims 364 farm murders happened since 2016, but only 33% of the arrested perpetrators were convicted.
The organisation’s Ernst Roets says they believe farm murders should be recognised as a unique phenomenon that requires a unique approach.
“We have a campaign for farm murders to be prioritised, a campaign for better government policy, for better reaction and for the political side of this crime phenomenon, because we are tax-paying citizens, the government has to ensure that its citizens are safe.
“As tax-paying citizens, we have a right to demand proper treatment and proper response by the government. We believe farm attack has to be responded to with a unique strategy. We are not asking for farmers to get special treatment; we believe that they should get equal treatment. It is a unique crime phenomenon and should be dealt with in a unique way.”
Roets says farmers deserve to feel safe.
“In the light of the murder and torture rates on farms, it is now necessary for farmers to take their safety into their own hands. AfriForum aims to make farmers and their families more defensible against farm attacks. AfriForum will continue to drive projects, actions and campaigns to improve the safety of our farmers and support them where we can.”
