Taxi ranks to be sanitised twice a day, says Santaco

The South African Taxi Council (Santaco) has vowed that taxi ranks will be sanitised twice a day as part of efforts to curb the spread of the corona virus.
This comes after a pronouncement by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula that all forms of public transport, including buses and trains, will have to be sanitised to fight the COVID-19.
“Taxi ranks will be disinfected with a chemical twice a day. Sanitizers will be administered to everyone entering or exiting a taxi rank,” Santaco president Philip Taaibosch said at a media briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
The taxi industry is responsible for ferrying around at least 16.5 million passengers on a daily basis.
There is concern that commuters, who sit in close proximity to one another, will find it difficult to practice social distancing.
But Taaibosch says he is confident that taxi drivers will comply with regulations set out by Santaco.
“I believe that when you teach, you don’t stop teaching. It is a continuous thing. Through teaching and communicating we will make sure that they are complying.”
