Commuters have been urged to make alternative arrangements to get to work and school.

Speaking to Jacaranda FM News, Deputy Chairperson of the National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the Ekurhuleni Region Phaphama Zulu, said the strike action is due to the government decision to deploy busses on the taxi routes.

He says the routes have now become saturated.

"Apperently there is someone who got a tender out there so they put his or her busess on our routes. We have been trying to talk to government to understand that we bought cars, a lot of cars. if our routes are becoming over saturated it is a problem for us.

"Late last night as we were trying to engage, our patrols were arrested and there was not even time to let our passengers know that there will be no transport today (Thursday).

Zulu adds that there is no indication yet for how long this strike will continue.

"Maybe during the day we will have a meeting and resolve this, but I can't tell you how long the strike will last."
