Taxi subsidies to be discussed at lekgotla - Mbalula
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Department of Transport hopes to start subsiding the taxi industry during the next financial year.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula made the remarks at the launch of National Taxi lekgotla in Germiston on Thursday.
Mbalula, however, made it clear that the taxi industry would have to transform and adhere to some regulations before government would be willing to start handing out subsidies.
The lekgotla will discuss various issues affecting the sector, including regulations and the formalisation of the industry.
"Now it is important to understand that these are the things we want to achieve and that we want to implement by the beginning and introduce the subsidy scheme for the taxi industry,” said Mbalula.
"So, when we talk about subsidy, we are not only talking about the operator, we talk about those who use it, it must be affordable and professional.
The national taxi lekgotla is set to take place in October.
